Nikkor 16-85 @22 mm, f10; D90 The view opened when we hit this billabong suddenly. None of several Gregory famous 4WD tracks could get us here at the time. True, we didn't try a caterpillar. Anyway, we succeeded in losing the path. Or choosing the one gradually disappearing and finally gone. There was the known question, is it that we lost the way or it just is meant to be like that (by the nature of it). However, landmarks were at sight so we kept cool; most of our hikes no one knew about us. The bush seems somewhat bigger when each step must be negotiated smart. Well, sometimes it is good to get lost. And the track wasn’t far away either as we found out later. The Billabong has access to it from the other side but the views can't compare. Soon we continued our goal to the East Baines River. This is a morning shot, we set off at dawn, the day was very hot. Ngraringman people used to live in the area. They are extremely recent times, taken from a stone age culture point of view. With no change in the enviroment.

East Baines River Billabong

Nikkor 16-85 VR @ 28mm, f10; D90 This upper part of the river runs through the arid dry land. It's a lifeline for many animals and used to be very important in life of Ngaringman people. They used the area for hunting, gathering food and collection of materials to make tools and weapons. The Wet season level of water flow is marked with plant alluviums in the canopy. With the Dry in progress, river gradually fragments into the smaller streams and further creates number of billabongs, some of which last untill the cyclone season. On Patrol

The trick was to prevent the camera from melting while waiting in the attempt of the capture, my hat had to do.

River of which pulse is very much tuned with monsoon seasons. Gaining an enormous strength, turning itself into one of the largest rivers on Earth, than subsiding again into quiet, mild waters. Nikkor 16-85@ 28mm

Ngumban Cliff

Nikkor 16-85, 32 mm, f9, midday light; D90 One of countless formations melted in vastness that for some reason got a name. No turist destination by any means. Arid grassland of semi desert with draught resistant trees dispersed below and on the flat top of the Cliff.

The Road Train, Great Northern Hwy

tokina 11-16 @16mm, f9; D90 You don’t want to mess with this vehicles. They are long and go regularly 130 kph. Always very cautious overtaking or whatever about them. A sudden use of brakes and their tires can be in pieces. This is a short one, I wouldn’t call it a road train. When the dark falls, the animals are to be reckon with. Heaps of white bones along the Australian North hwys are the reminder as well as the dead bodies and scavengers. 4x4 bumper is a wise addition to your 4WD however hard you try to avoid hitting an animal. Time to time you spot a rusty car of 70ties, 60ties aside. A long way everywhere and few people in a huge area. Smoke still raising here and ash flying around. Took me a while to get it lighted, it's the preferred version.
